Welcome Back
02:58
|
|||
Here we are,
Sayin’ prayers in the middle of the night
For your soul and for your life.
We know you’re not all bad,
Until the day you come knockin’ on the porch screen door.
Well you’re welcome back anytime you please,
But pleased is not what we’ll be if you stay gone.
All roads lead to Rome, and all paths lead to home,
And we’ll be waiting for you when you return.
Here we are,
Sayin’ prayers in the middle of the night.
For your health and for your sight.
We know you’re not all bad,
But we’ll hope for good and dread the worst
Until the day when you pull up in our drive.
And your chair,
Is sittin’ empty when we all eat.
Table’s just one spot from complete.
And your bed,
Is all made up like you like.
Clean washed sheets and fixed up right.

You and Me Baby
04:00
|
|||
The river’s ahead, the city’s behind
The breeze is blowing dust from my mind,
It’s just you and me baby,
We’re just crusin’ along.
The river sings and the birds harmonize
The white clouds dance the sun dazzles the sky
It’s just you and me baby,
We’re just crusin’ along.
I like to be out where I’m free (leavin’ behind responsibility)
Let the wind run her fingers through my hair (and charge my soul with sweet clean air)
Deep blue is the sky the moon and stars above
The air is full with the scent of love,
It’s just you and me baby,
We’re just crusin’ along.

You didn’t come this far through Missouri, to see me.
You didn’t come this far past Saint Louis, just to see me.
I know there’s history in Kansas city,
But we’re miles and miles far East of there.
I know you’ve got family in Joplin,
But what on earth brings you here?
I can understand if you’re just cruising through on 70
Or heading South to Jeff on 63.
Heck there’s scenic outlooks at Rocheport,
But what on earth brings you here?
You didn’t come this far through Missouri, to see me.
You didn’t come this far past Saint Louis, just to see me.
I know there’s Roots and Blues festival in fall time
And True False Festival comes with Spring.
But since it’s the middle of summer and Faurot field is not in season,
What on earth brings you here?

When We Met
10:50
|
|||
And on the bank of the Mississippi, with you sitting next to me,
We’ll watch a sunset bloody red, diving down into the west.
And on the edge of Missouri, with you sitting next to me,
We’ll watch steamboats passing by, and enjoy the evening sky.
And there we shared a few short weeks, before I left, and you cried,
And winter had passed when we re-met
And then I skipped all those parties, Just to see your quirky smile,
And those sky blue eyes
And then once more like a deceptive storm, my caravan headed East,
And the New England coast when I left.
And you hating the difficulty, decided to ditch your town and leave,
And adventure with us
It’s so cliché but all I can say it was raining,
When you snuck out and tried to join,
But a creaking floor, and your father heard, And dragged you backwards,
When I left.
And on the bank of the Mississippi, with you sitting next to me,
We’d watch a sunset bloody red, and enjoy the evening sky

For the Sowers
03:47
|
|||
We sing this for the sowers, who choose carefully the season and times,
When planting will give birth, and not drown or freeze or choke,
All things begin,
And all need a starting place at first,
All things need a place to call home,
All things begin
We sing this for the gardeners, who till the ground and wait,
As seeds, blinking, come awake and push through the overhead dirt
All things grow,
And all things need water to survive,
And all things need a place to reach up high,
And all things grow.
This is for the harvesters
Who know when to reap the crop,
They’ll bring in the abundant supply
And feed a hungry world
But all things die,
And all things need sunlight to survive,
And all things need a place to reach up high,
But all things die

Strong Woman
02:50
|
|||
All the other boys like all them princess dolls,
Who can’t tell their head from a hole in the wall.
Now all girls are God’s gift to man,
But I’m gonna find me a strong girl if I can.
I need a strong woman, to sweep me off my feet,
I need a strong woman, to teach this heart of mine to beat,
I need a girl who’ll pick me up like a newborn babe,
And for her, all my lovin’ I’ll save.
I need a strong woman, to win all that bread for me.
I need a strong woman, to fix the car while I pour her tea.
I need a girl who’ll hold me close when dark scares me so,
And to her all my lovin’ goes.
All the other boys like all them princess dolls,
Who can’t tell their head from a hole in the wall.
Now all girls are God’s gift to man,
But I’m gonna find me a strong girl if I can.
I need a strong woman who can bench press a whole house with one arm,
I need a strong woman, who’s got as much brawn as she does charm,
I need a girl who’ll outwit me at ev’ry turn,
And for her all my lovin’ burns

Drop D Blues
03:34
|
|||
There are so many days,
With a cold and joyless tinge.
When my hours pass on by bleak and grim
Then I hope for laughter that’ll split my side in two
With friends that rarely fail and always try.
Believe me,
I’ve almost given up
And hear me, when I, say
That life will bleed you dry
But that sweet wine of hope will
Getcha by.
And when I finally go to
That final rest.
And see the ones gone on before
I know they’ll hug me
On the other side
And toast me into life evermore

Bicycle
03:27
|
|||
Pedaling fast, with my shirt catching the wind,
Blood pumping fast, as the wheels spin,
Off road and on road,
no one to say no
burning a trail through the city
And who said only planes carry men to the sky,
these two wheels lift me off of the pavement
I’ll prove that simple mechanics and strength
will do what only birds and angels can
Tasting pure air, I grip the bars,
Gasping for air, I’ll outrun the cars,
but promise to stay
in my own lane,
But some promises are made to break
|
||||
9. |
||||
You won’t catch me often, complaining about the weather.
Most of the time I’d simply sigh, and throw another coat over my shoulder.
But lately, it’s hard to ignore,
the ice coverin’ the front door
The sweat freezes on my face; my car’s been slipping and sliding all over the place.
I sure wish Spring would come.
I’m not saying that we all hate the winter.
My family and I, we like to be together, when the cold keeps us in
But lately, it’s hard to forget,
Just to get my car out, I need a drill and an ice-pick
My snot freezes on my face, and my dog’s slipping all over the place
I sure wish Spring would come.
We all love Christmas time, but we’d love to say goodbye
to the long dreary cold in February
I sure wish Spring would come.

Circus Song
03:55
|
|||
We’ve packed the road solid from Springfield to St. Louis
And we’ve brought along some overseas tourists,
Elephants with tusks gleaming white
Lions too and they make such a sight.
Tall men standing twelve foot high
With faces covered in colorful dye
Polka dot shirts and dancing a jig
Drinking pop out of bottles with swig after swig
That’s right everybody loves the way we’re movin’ along.
That’s right everybody loves the way we’re movin’ along.
And when the magician comes out on stage,
We’re sure you’ll agree
Besides the wonders of ancient Rome
There’s no place you’d rather be,
We’ve packed the road solid from Rolla to St. Louis
And we’ve brought along some overseas tourists,
Chimpanzees dressed in suits of all white,
Birds of colors that make such a sight.
That’s right everybody loves the way we’re movin’ along.
That’s right everybody loves the way we’re movin’ along.
And if we can entertain you more
Than the news on the radio dial,
Then we’ll rally together and hope that you leave
Here with an unbreakable smile.
If you’ve got a second hop in our parade,
We’ll keep on marching ‘til night takes the day
Then set up our tents and prepare the show
Dancing ‘round our ring with monkeys in tow
That’s right everybody loves the way we’re movin’ along.
That’s right everybody loves the way we’re movin’ along.

Mississippi
03:10
|
|||
I’ve been up and down this river, twenty long-short years,
Drifted past ev’ery nook and cranny, that water swirls,
If there’s any wisdom that I’ve learned, it’s that this river’s mighty wide,
an’ when she wants to eat ya, there ain’t no place to hide.
Oh big ol’ Mississippi river,
Oh big ol’ tributary sipper
please don’t drown me alive.
before the boats brought us over,
You big ol’ gargantuan river
you were still swelling with pride
I’ve been up and down this river, when she’s slipped out of her cage
Demonstrating her ferocious strength and sudden rage
Have you heard of eighteen fourty-four or eighteen fifty-five?
She rivaled the mighty sea and swallowed dry land alive

Goin' Home
03:56
|
|||
The long road is dark,
the night damp and chill
at times feelin' lost and alone.
Yet I know there is an end
where there's warmth and good friends
and the sound of my footsteps is known
I've wasted so much time,
chasin' phantoms in the night
Never finding much to really call my own
there you are right where you've been
ever waiting in the light
you know I've never really been out here alone
I'm goin' home.
I'm goin' home
the journey's nearly over
night soon be lost in dawn
and when love drives out fear
pain of labor turns to joy
and hope will find you waiting there for me
One time long ago,
when first I heard you call my name
I opened my door and I let you in
though I promised I'd give you all
my will flickers like a flame
it's just your constant love that drives me home again

Find a New Career
05:07
|
|||
It’s time for you to go, Buddy! Find a new career,
This circus life, just ain’t for you, I’ll say it plain and clear
Forge ahead, begin anew,
Life up life the best that you can do
I ain’t sayin’ you’re fired, but you are (YOU’VE GOT SOME NERVE KID)
No one’s kickin’ ya out, but we are (TO SHOW YOUR FACE ‘ROUND HERE)
I ain’t sayin’ you’ve got no job, but you don’t (YOU BEST GET ON GONE)
You don’t have to leave, but get lost
That trick you pulled, I’ll bet you think that’s swell,
Talking trash behind my back, It’s all just as well,
And as manager of this travelin’ gig,
I want you out and as far away as you can get.
Look, I know, we’ve had our little fights,
But when you steal dollars from the safe, and refuse to say you did,
We’ll really have to part, Or else you’ll go to jail,
Or else I’ll let loose the strong armed man, with vengeance out to kill
I didn’t know that I, I didn’t know that I, Had hired the kind of thief you are
I didn’t know that I, I didn’t know that I, Had Raised such a crooked boy
